Your wedding details photos are a small collection of photos that a photographer usually takes at the beginning of your wedding day. The photos usually consist of all of your sentimental items and details laid out together in a stylistic way. Examples of some of the sentimental items and details typically included in these photos are wedding invites, earrings, perfume, shoes, flowers, stamps, family heirlooms, etc.
To put it shortly, the answer is no, you do not necessarily need wedding details photos. In fact, I have done a couple of weddings where the couple has chosen to opt out of them. It’s totally a matter of preference, honestly! I’m here to tell you why you SHOULD have at least some wedding details photos, and to give you some ideas of what to include in them.
One of the biggest reasons why I suggest to my couples to put together a box of details for me, is because it is SO SPECIAL to see all of your sentimental items in one place! You spend so much time planning your wedding, thinking of every fine detail like what your invites are going to look like, what flowers you’re going to use, what jewelry to wear; the list goes on. Your wedding details photos are an opportunity for your photographer to lay it all out in a way that fully encompasses the thought you have put into your day, and the beauty of it all. In a way, wedding details photos are a small snippet of the entire vibe of your wedding. It showcases your colors, your florals, what you’re wearing.. just from a small collection of photos, you can see the entire day.
I’m not going to lie, details photos have quickly become a favorite of mine to take on a wedding day! Mostly because every couple and flat-lay is so unique, and I am really able to get creative with laying everything out and showcasing all of your important items.
So now let’s talk about the different things you can include in your Wedding Details Photos!
Stationary is a great place to start. Often times, you put a lot of thought into what your wedding invites are going to look like, and what kind of experience your guests are going to have opening them. Details photos are a great opportunity to take photos of the beautiful invites you picked out.
Jewelry can be one of the most sentimental items from your wedding day. Rings, being the obvious one, along with the other special jewelry you picked out to wear. It could have even been something that was passed down to you from a family member, or your “something blue.”
If you’ve decided to have flowers included on your wedding day, they are an AMAZING item to throw into your wedding details photos. Real florals can elevate the decor or your wedding significantly. Not to mention, most of the time they reflect your colors as well. Pro tip: Ask your florist, or if you’re doing your flowers yourself, save some extra flower stems and greenery for the details photos!
Lastly, I think throwing in some of the things you guys plan on wearing is a great idea! They really help encapsulate all of the details of your outfit, and the entire vibe of your outfit. Also consider your perfume or cologne, so you can even remember what you smelled like on your most special day. I’ve also even seen brides incorporating their garters, or grooms their ties!
I do want to make it a point to only include what is special to you. You don’t want to just throw a bunch of items in your box, especially some items that are of little significance to you, and have your details photos be extremely busy. The term “less is more” also applies here!
Make sure your photographer has time dedicated to taking details photos in your timeline! It actually takes a little bit of time to get all of your details together and lay them out for photos. You really want to ensure that your photographer has adequate time to take these photos for you! I usually recommend 30 minutes for details photos.
Details photos are a perfect opportunity to showcase all of the thought you have put into the smallest things of your day, and letting them have their own moment to shine. It’s also fun to look back and remember what perfume you wore, what your fresh flowers looked like, your shoes, and so on.
Setting these items aside for your wedding photographer before they arrive, is a great idea.🩷
